Copywriting: What is a copywriter?

There are not many searches for 'copywriter Bromley' or 'Bromley copywriter', because not many people know that what I do is called copywriting. In fact, I'm often asked what 'copywriting' is.

The first point to note is that it's nothing to do with 'copyright', trademarking or intellectual property law.

'Copy' is any text that is written for advertising, print or web purposes. So a copywriter, obviously, is someone who writes such copy.

Like any writer, a copywriter should have an extensive vocabulary, and the ability to write simply and clearly using language that flows. They should also be able to use correct spelling, grammar and punctuation (or know when and how to break the rules for effect).

Unlike other writing, copywriting is the specialist craft of persuasion. A good copywriter will always include a 'call to action' i.e. something that makes it clear to readers what you want them to do, whether it is to pick up the phone, send an email, place an order or book an appointment.
